Earth’s mightiest heroes are up against their most strenuous battle in “Avengers: Infinity War (2018).” The Marvel Universe has been building this epic battle with Thanos for a couple of years. So, why did Mad Titan invade the Earth?

He is looking for Infinity Stones (or Infinity Gems) for a specific reason. You should already know why if you have watched Infinity War or else you should go and watch the movie first.

Nevertheless, there’re several questions about the power of the Infinity Stones. So, let me give you a quick rundown all about Infinity Stones (or Gems) powers. Let’s start. Shall we?

What Are The Infinity Stones And Their Powers? [EXPLAINED]

Infinity Stones are incredibly powerful gems that grant limitless power to the user to obliterate planets, solar system and literally anything.

Infinity Stones (Gems) And Their Powers Explained

There are totally Six Infinity Stones:

  1. The Space Stone [a.k.a. The Tesseract] (Blue)
  2. The Mind Stone (Yellow)
  3. The Reality Stone [a.k.a Aether] (Red)
  4. The Power Stone (Purple)
  5. The Time Stone [Eye of Agamotto] (Green)
  6. The Soul Stone (Orange)

As per the Collector’s words in “Guardians of the Galaxy (2014),” there were six characteristics before the existence of the universe. The Big Bang transformed those entities into six separate Infinity Stones.

Where Have You Seen The Infinity Stones Before?

Yeah! You did see some of the Infinity Stones, but you may not recognize it previously so let me walk you through all the stones and its power respectively.

The Space Stone [a.k.a. The Tesseract] (Blue)

The Space Stone (or the Tesseract) allows the user to travel through space instantly. The user can create a portal to move from one side of the universe to another.

Loki used the Tesseract to open a portal to help the Chitauri forces to invade New York City in the first series of “The Avengers (2012).” It also allows superhuman speed along with omnipresence ability which lets the user be present at multiple places at once.

After the defeat of Loki on ”The Avengers,” Thor brought the Tesseract (or Space Stone) and Loki back to Asgard to keep it safe. However, we saw Loki discern to it just before the destruction of Asgard at the end of “Thor: Ragnarok (2017).”

We saw in the latest Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos has Tessarect which Loki gives to Thanos to save Thor’s life (as shown in the trailer).

The Mind Stone (Yellow)

The Mind Stone allows the user to take control of other minds. You must have noticed it in the first Avengers movie in the form of Loki’s Sceptre (Scepter). He can control anyone after touching them with the Sceptre.

The Avengers retrieves Loki’s Sceptre at the start of “Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).” Afterward, Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) and Bruce Banner (aka Hulk) utilize this stone’s power to create Ultron, i.e., an artificially intelligent peace-keeping program. After some squabbling, the Avengers ultimately create another Android, Vision. The Mind Stone gives a lot of power such as superhuman strength, fly and move through walls like a ghost, but it doesn’t give him mind manipulation ability. It has been kept inside Vision’s forehead, but you already know if you saw Infinity War, how Thanos ripped it off from his forehead at the end.

The Reality Stone [a.k.a Aether] (Red)

Thor The Dark World (2013) Reality Stone Aether

The Reality Stone (Aether) lets the user control matter. In “Thor: The Dark World (2013),” the villain Malekith (the Accursed) wanted to utilize this red liquid stuff to turn matter into a dark matter as it turns out to be a manifestation of the Reality Stone. Later, two Asgardians give Aether to the collector as they can’t keep the Space Stone and Reality Stone in the same place in Asgard. It turned out to be a massive mistake as the Collector says “One down, five to go.” in an evil voice.

The Power Stone (Purple)

The Power Stone allows its holder unparallel strength (more than enough to destroy an entire planet). Star-Lord finds the stone by chance in Guardians of the Galaxy. Later, Ronan (the Accuser) steals it from him and threats to eliminate an entire race.

Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014) Power Stone

The Guardians leave to Nova Corps (the space police) for safeguarding. But we saw that Thanos has got the power stone already but it wasn’t shown in the movie.

According to the directors’ word, “there were several stones to attain so one had to go” from the screen time and they mentioned that Thanos decimated the war-torn planet of Xandar to obtain the Power Stone.

The Time Stone [Eye of Agamotto] (Green)

The Time Stone permits its holder to manipulate time in all sort of ways like fast-forwarding or re-wind time. Stephen Strange discovers the Eye of Agamotto pendant in the library of Kamar-Taj, where he trains in the mystic arts in “Doctor Strange (2016).”

Previously, he used it against the villain Dormammu to trap into a time loop to prevent the destruction of the Earth. In the Infinity War, Doctor Strange handed the Time Stone to Thanos purposely to save Tony Stark’s (Iron Man’s) life from Thanos.

The Soul Stone (Orange)

The Soul Stone hasn’t been shown yet in the movie. We may see it in the next title of Avengers. But as per the comics, it can control all souls of living and dead, bring back souls from dead people and another place (or dimension).

What is Infinity Gauntlet?

In the “Guardians of the Galaxy (2014),” Peter steals back the stone from Ronan and almost dies while holding it until all the members join hands to balance its power. Nobody can hold an Infinity Stone without a container, for instance, the Time Stone is in a necklace, the Mind Stone in a Sceptre and later in the Vision forehead and the space stone in the Tesseract, etc. Therefore, Thanos wears a special golden glove to contain all the stones.

Why does Thanos seek to destroy half of the Universe?

Why? It’s an excellent question. There may not be a definitive answer to it yet, but there are some possible reasons behind it. So, let’s find out. In the comics, Thanos falls in love with Death (or her physical incarnation) and gathers all the Infinity Stones to destroy universes to impress her.

On the other side, Marvel Studios told back in 2012 that a henchman told Thanos to fight the Avengers is to “court death.” But Infinity War’s writers may have a different perception about it. They mentioned that Thanos is concerned about the overpopulation and so he decided to reduce half of the population to “maintain balance” or else he is just pure evil.

Why didn’t Thanos obtain the Infinity Stones by himself before?

Thanos did order Ronan (the Accuser) and Loki to get him Infinity Stones, but both of them failed every time. He did collect all the stones (except Soul Stone) by himself in one go. So, why wouldn’t he act before? Maybe, he was waiting for the perfect opportunity, or he was lazy, perhaps.

How many heroes disintegrated and how many are alive?

After yanking off the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead, Thanos destroy the half of the population of the planet Earth with a snap of his finger and so there are countless lives are lost and as well as we saw some of the heroes perish like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, the Guardians of the Galaxy (Star-Lord, Groot, Drax, and Mantis), Nick Fury and Maria Hill, etc.

Here are some people/heroes who survived – Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, War Machine, Rocket, Nebula, Okoye, and M’baku.

Is it the end of Infinity War or there would be another part to it?

Marvel did announce to release Avengers Infinity War Part I in 2018 and Part II in 2019. However, they backed off from this idea even though we will see a new movie in the next year which is going to be an Avengers movie but it may not be for Infinity War’s sequel. So, you could say that the Infinity War might have ended with the first part only. We just have to wait for an official announcement.
