D-Day (2013) Review: Chronicles Of A Covert Operation

When did Bollywood start to throw surprises like this? After Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, D-Day punches adrenaline too. Extremities are shown in full bloom. Bloodshed and the gorgeous father-son chemistry which impales slowly through the movie. I watched a dynamic representation of how artistic goon war can be. You learn about extradition and the gangs which are different than the ones in GOW but as better. Shot in an expertly constructed brothel sets and shown with highest amount of mercilessness, this is D-Day for you. Ever seen a movie which is about patriotism and loyalty for your country but never waving the flag at all? This is it.

STORY

Wali Khan (Irrfan Khan), a Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent based in Pakistan who is posing as a barber in a small town with the mysterious Rudra Pratap Singh (Arjun Rampal) and Zoya Rehman (Huma Qureshi) and Aslam (Akash Dhaiya) plot the kidnapping of Goldman (Rishi Kapoor), the most wanted man from Pakistan.

PERFORMANCE

Khan and Rampal bring their characters to life. Rishi Kapoor has acted so well his villain part that he becomes the hero. The killings… the loved ones getting butchered, the whore and her snare, the beautiful wastelands and the enormous cast put together gives an exuberant performance. Ritesh Shah and Suresh Nair construct a collage of characters hell-bent on a collision course. The female actors, Huma Qureshi and Shruti Haasan have given a more than average performance to brag for. Their scenes are unique and timed. Nothing is wasted. The 153-minute film has its sluggish moments but with a good screenplay and a lesser involvement of bullshit, the movie sails. How the hunters become the hunted is what this movie is all about. The direction by Nikhil is vivid. He did his homework. The effort pulled in my makeup artists, costume designers- everyone on a freaking set adds up for the bloody good thriller.

MUSIC

The background music is ample and catch Alvida shall be avidly remembered. (That is if people watch this movie. The promotion was bad.)

Frankly speaking, I didn’t like the title. And the ending was disappointing. The narration is a plus point and Indian film makers should learn from D-Day what and how a narration should be done. It’s to edgy sometimes and too mashed up. Like all the four patriots showing up at once with their ‘Jai Hind’ enthusiasm, which makes you squirm in your seats.

VERDICT

D-Day might not be the agenda movie of the week or even the year. I mean, come on! Who even heard of it properly before maybe today… when you might have gone to the theater to watch last week’s blockbuster, BMB or maybe other pretty releases. Grab your wallets and run to the nearest theaters NOW. I don’t think I need to speak more. RATING- 4/5
