There’s nothing quite like a really great film to inspire your next big holiday. This countdown has a whole host of options for the quirky movie lover. From finding enlightenment in a Chinese monastery to brawling in Bavaria, or hiking through barren deserts to pushing your way through the streets of Manhattan; whatever it is that gets your blood racing we guarantee that one of these flicks will get you out of your armchair and striding boldly into your next adventure.
1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Starting at a place many of us know and tolerate, we’re introduced to a guy who feels like just another cog in the machine – Walter Mitty. Working for Life magazine, he decides to leave his hamster wheel existence on the search for one lost photo slide. Making his way through the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, Walter’s travels lead him through the stunning volcanic landscape of Iceland and through the mountainous vistas of the Himalayas. The scenery alone in this film is enough to make anyone up sticks and leave for the wilderness.
2. Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)
With all the melancholy of a great indie film, you know you’re onto a good thing before it’s even fully begun. Hector is a slightly miserable psychiatrist, who’s recently become bored with his predictable lifestyle. He vows to shake up his routine and goes on an adventure to find happiness, much to the disapproval of his girlfriend Clara. Once he’s embarked on his adventure, Hector meets many people who give him clues as to the true meaning of happiness. Venturing from the bright lights of Shanghai to a desolate mountaintop monastery, in the end, Hector finds happiness in the last place he was expecting to find it.
3. The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
It wouldn’t be a quirky countdown without Indie darling Wes Anderson. Bringing his usual melancholy humor to proceedings, The Darjeeling Limited sees three brothers traverse the richly colorful and deeply beautiful Indian landscape. They face all the trials and tribulations that you could imagine as they journey through a foreign country, set to the heady soundtrack of stars. Although most people would be ready to book themselves a ticket, sadly there is no real Darjeeling Limited, but if you are feeling like a trip across India then don’t let this put you off!
4. The National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985)
Beginning with the Griswald family winning an all-expenses-paid trip through Europe, this whirlwind road trip will have you howling with laughter. Chaos ensues in every scene as they make their way past the famous landmarks of London, Paris, Bavaria, and Rome, dismantling Stonehenge, fighting, being robbed and getting the car stuck. Much as the road trip in this movie has been an exciting one, you might not be able to help to breathe a sigh of relief when they fly safely over wonderful New York and away from their European adventure.
5. Tracks (2013)
Based on the true and inspirational story of Robyn Davidson, Mia Wasikowska makes her way across the staggering plains of Western Australia. Accompanied only by her beloved dog and four camels, this solitary journey is grueling and inspiring in equal measures. Whilst this feat of endurance would still be incredible today, this kind of trek was unprecedented for a lone woman in the 70s. Definitely, a movie that makes you want to get up and see the world.
